Joanna Ciechanowska is a Polish painter, graphic artist and designer based in London. After completing her graduation in the Academy of Fine Arts, ASP in Warsaw with MA in Graphic Design and Painting in 1976 (prof. Leszek Holdanowicz), she travelled to London which was a prelude to the life of migration. Living and working in Tehran, where she was caught up in the Iranian revolution, she become a British citizen overnight. She lived in Lesotho, Cairo and Hong Kong for many years, returning to London in between constant migration spells. She worked for CBS Records where her cover for Bonnie Tyler won the selection for the exhibition of D&AD Awards European Illustration in Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York in 1986. Her design and illustrations for IBM first PC computer launch campaign were used for posters and brochures world wide. Her clients included London Transport Advertising, Barclays Bank, Oxford University Press, Time, Time Out, Rexel, amongst other publications. Her pastel painting was exhibited in Whitechapel Gallery in the exhibition curated by Nicholas Serota in 1987. She exhibited in Cooper Hewitt Museum – New York, Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, Royal Academy, Somerset House Gallery – London, Summerhall Gallery – Edinburgh where Summerhall TV recorded an artist talk with her. She also exhibited in Hong Kong while living there and recently, in Tokyo and Kyoto – selected for East West Art Award. She had a solo show in TEST Gallery in Warsaw, in 1999 and a group show in BWA Bielsko-Biala and Wroclaw.
