Painter, engraver and university lecturer born in 1973 in Zabrze, Poland. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland in 2000 (Graphic Workshops and Painting Department). He earned his Ph.D. (2006) and D.Sc. (habilitation) degrees (2012) at the University of Katowice. He works as a lecturer in Institute of Art in Cieszyn (The Silesian University). An important part of his work is drawing. It is not only the basis of a painting workshop, but also an independent form of artistic expression. He has presented his art in many individual and group exhibitions all over the world, including Poland, Serbia, China, Sweden, France.
Tomasz Tobolewski paintings has been offered on the Polish auction market since 2010. He has entered the field in the very special moment indeed – on the rise of the new market section, dedicated to ultra-contemporary art. Unlike most of the others, younger and inexperienced, his talent had been already shaped. Besides, he could show a very high level of technical skills. In fact, he was already renown and multi-awarded drawer launching an academic career in the Silesian University in Katowice (Art Insitute in Cieszyn). A very special thing about the advent of the Tobolewski’s auction presence is that he had been soon discovered by the experienced market professionals. This cooperation had let him to avoid some of the most common market mistakes of the time. As a result, Tomasz Tobolewski (b. 1973) is one of the very few contemporary polish painters following a professional and carefully marked out market route. From the beginning he has got recognition among the collectors and connoisseurs of the good painting. Their bidding raised the auction prices of the large scale works on canvas from 2000–4000 PLN (400–800 GBP) to 4500-7000 PLN (900–1500 GBP) over less than a decade. The closer look at the price trend proves the uniqueness of the artist’s market position: it has been growing and it has been growing steadily. Not only does the average price move up; so does the minimum price. The last paintings by Tobolewski to buy for less than 2500 PLN (500 GBP) in terms of premium price were auctioned three years ago, and even then it came as a surprise. And so ever since, the bigger sales had appeared (7000 PLN = over 1400 GBP, incl. buyer’s premium). However, they can by no means be compared to the similar art on the European auction market. The combination of artistic (painting) highest qualities with prices typical for the emerging art markets (especially from the Central Eastern Europe) can and should be treated as an investment. More than that – it is one of the biggest market opportunities for the todays open minded art collector and investor.
